Qualicum School District Walk Limits (Grades K-12)

Walk limits vary slightly by age, and apply from the student's residence to their neighbourhood school. Ministry of Education guidelines for walk limits are 4 km for K-3 students and 4.8 km for Grades 4-12 students.  School District 69 has adjusted these walk limits to reflect our own district's configuration of schools.

Eligibility walk limits in Qualicum are set at:

  • 3.2 kilometers for K-5 students (elementary school)
  • 4.0 kilometers for Grades 6-8 (middle school)
  • 4.8 kilometers for Grades 9-12 students (secondary school)

There are exceptions to walk limits where special needs students are concerned. Adjustments may also be made in the event of unsafe conditions developing, as judged jointly by the RCMP, the Department of Highways and the Transportation Department.

For students living outside the walk limits, the board may provide bus transportation, or if this is impractical or uneconomical, it may offer transportation assistance to the parent so that the parent can drive the student to school or to the bus stop.
