General Guiding Principals

  • Respect the rights, property and feelings of others.
  • Act in a safe, courteous and responsible manner.
  • Pay attention to the instructions of all school staff.

Problem Solving

Students are acknowledged for solving problems in peaceful ways. We encourage students to adopt the following assertive strategy when confronted by bothersome behaviour of others:

Expectations

Playground

  • Remain on the school grounds at all times unless permission is given from teachers and parents/guardians.
  • Stay off bicycles after arriving at school.
  • Act in a manner that is safe and courteous to oneself and others.
  • Do not bring dangerous items to school.
  • Be prompt in returning to class after the bell.
  • Toy weapons are not to be brought to school.
  • Students are not to engage in dangerous play; to do so will be viewed as serious in nature.

Inside/Hallways at Recess/Lunch

  • Walk - do not run; use inside voices.
  • Be respectful of hallway displays.
  • Hats are to be removed when entering the school.
  • Choose lunchtime activities and stay there; do not come in and out of school.

In Days (Inclement Weather)

  • Students are to remain in their classrooms and choose quiet activities.
  • Students are to go to one of the supervised areas, i.e. gym, library, computer lab.
  • Students are responsible for not returning to class wet/muddy.

Computer Lab

  • Students are expected to work quietly in the lab.
  • Students are to be respectful of the equipment.
  • Internet access follows District Policy #5056
  • No food or drinks in the lab.

Fighting

  • Students are not to fight or play-fight.
  • Students who fight will be sent to the principal’s office, the incident documented, and the matter will be treated as serious in nature.
  • Parents will be contacted about the incident.

In Class

  • Students are not to disrupt the learning environment in the classroom.
  • Students are to follow the directions of all staff.
  • Disruptive students are to be dealt with by teachers using strategies that are appropriate, involving the administration where appropriate.
  • Students who chronically do not respond to teacher strategies will be brought before a School Based Team to develop an overall support strategy involving the principal, classroom teacher, Area Counsellor, and parents/ guardians.

Consequences

  • Students who misbehave/bother others will be given a warning and may be directed to a place or activity where this will not happen.
  • Students who are disruptive in class may be given a “time out” period in their own classroom, another classroom or the office.
  • Students engaging in unacceptable behaviour or language may be asked to complete a “think sheet” where they will reflect upon their actions, and make a plan to improve. “Think Sheets” will be taken home for parent/guardian signature and are to be returned to school.
  • Student misbehaviour of a serious nature will be brought to the attention of the principal. Parents/guardians will be notified.
  • For serious or repeated misbehaviour, students may be given an In-school Suspension (ISS). During an ISS students will work quietly isolated from others. Parents/guardians will be notified.
  • For serious misbehaviour, students may be given an Out of School Suspension (OSS). Parents/guardians will be notified.
  • Students with chronic behavioural difficulties may be put on a student support plan.
  • Students who misbehave may lose privileges including field trips, special events, and free lunch time break.

Bully Prevention

  • All students take part in an annual Bully Prevention program to ensure that all students, staff and volunteers are provided a safe, secure and welcoming learning and working environment. To that end, acts of bullying: intimidation, discrimination, and/or harassment, will be dealt with as per Board Policy #7164

BC Human Rights

Members of our school community support the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of all individuals in accordance with the law ~ prohibiting discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical and mental disability, gender or sexual orientation.

Prevention of Retaliation:

All reasonable steps will be taken to prevent retaliation against a student who has made a complaint of a breach of a code of conduct.

Special Consideration

In application of our school’s Code of Conduct, special considerations may apply to students with Special Needs if those students are unable to comply due to having a disability of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional or behavioural nature.

Note:

When travelling to and from school, students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the Code of Conduct of the school. Students who contravene the Code of Conduct while travelling to and from school in circumstances which adversely impact the welfare of other students or the atmosphere of the school may be subject to discipline.

In the area of teaching appropriate behaviour, we believe we are in a partnership with parents/guardians working to support students as they learn social responsibility. We welcome information from you about your child which will help us in this task. We ask that you talk with your child about their attitude, the approach they take and how they get along with others.
