PES Code of Conduct

MISSION STATEMENT

At Parksville Elementary, we strive to provide a secure environment in which children can grow academically, emotionally, and socially.

CODE OF CONDUCT

It is the responsibility of all members of our school community to use common sense and to develop and maintain a safe, caring and orderly learning environment. To ensure a safe environment and to protect the rights of all, the school community has established the following rules:

Be:

Soyez:

Safe

Sécuritaire

Respectful

Respectueux

Responsible

Responsable

These rules are used as a guide to govern our interactions with each other and are easily understood by all students, staff, and parents.

Through discussion and learning we guide students to a better understanding of themselves and each other and work toward respectful and cooperative relationships.

SCHOOL WIDE

 Problem Solving Strategy

For minor problems students are encouraged to take personal responsibility and use an appropriate problem solving strategy such as T. W. A.  T. W. A. stands for:

Talk to the person     Walk away from the problem     Ask an adult for help.

 In the Classroom

Each classroom has a set of rules, expectations, and routines specific to the grade level and class, and based on the virtues of safety, responsibility, and respect.  Teachers use a variety of positive behaviour management strategies to encourage and reinforce appropriate conduct.

 On the Playground

Safe and respectful play is of first importance on the playground.  Students are expected to use the virtues and the T.W.A. strategy.  The supervising teachers and noon hour supervisors can offer opportunities where both parties can sit and find a solution to their problems.

 Prevention of Retaliation

Children are encouraged to notify adults regarding serious misbehaviour by other students.  All reasonable steps will be taken to prevent retaliation against any student who has made a complaint about another student’s misbehaviour.

DISCIPLINE AND CONSEQUENCES

Discipline and consequences are used to teach and guide students to appropriate behaviour and conduct.  Positive discipline provides the opportunity to learn and grow and helps children understand and be responsible for their actions.  More importantly, positive discipline empowers children to resolve problems.  Discipline and consequences are incremental, progressing from mild to serious.

When students are not caring, respectful, and safe, they need to be held accountable for their actions.  We want to help children learn from their mistakes and to repair the harm done.  Each incident is looked at, and each child is considered as an individual.  Consequences become more serious with the number of incidents and age of the child.

Special considerations may apply to students with Special Needs if those students are unable to comply due to having a disability of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional or behavioural nature.

Behaviours that require intervention are those which:

 ·                    Interfere with the learning of others

·                    Interfere with an orderly environment

·                    Create unsafe conditions

In cases where significant behaviour intervention is required, we will work closely with parents to develop common understandings to support each other at school, and at home.

Further, in some circumstances students may be subject to consequences prescribed in specific School Board Policies.

DAMAGE TO PROPERTY

A student who wilfully damages school property or the personal belongings of another member of the community will be required to pay for repairs and/or replacement or make restitution in another form.

TRAVELING TO AND FROM SCHOOL

When traveling to and from school, when parents/guardians are not present, including travelling to and from the bus stop, students are under the authority of the school and are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the school’s Code of Conduct.

Students who travel by school bus must abide by the regulations as set out in the Transportation Handbook.  Students need to accept the authority of the bus driver.

DRESS CODE

Our dress code follows our School Board’s Policy #7003.  Clothing needs to be safe, respectful, and in keeping with a positive learning environment.

 BC HUMAN RIGHTS

Our school supports the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of all individuals in accordance with the law – prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical and mental disability, sex or sexual orientation.
