Learning Support Team
At WInchelsea we have a variety of Learning Support staff who  provide assistance for all students identified as needing additional help.  Student Support Staff are key members of the School Based Team, and assist classroom teachers and educational assistants and, as appropriate, provide direct instruction to a full range of students with learning and / or behavioural needs, in conjunction with other non-enrolling staff such as ELL and LAC teachers. Our student support team have a variety roles:

Learning Skills Program
The role of the Learning Support Teacher is to:
- adapt and modifying programs, including instructional
  and assessment techniques.
- facilitating the implementation of programs for students with special needs.
- assisting teachers in developing or providing materials for students with special learning 
  needs. 
 

-Creating Individual Lesson Plans (IEPs) with the collaboration of the parents, teachers and Resource Team and other significant school personnel

-Assisting teachers with the implementation of the IEP goals through any necessary adaptations to the curriculum to help the students achieve success

-Determining specific learning needs through assessment,direct interaction with the student and feedback from teachers/parents following the screening process

-Implementing recommendations from District Evaluations

-Developing and implementing programs for students with unique learning styles either within the classroom or in a small group setting depending on the students needs

-Maintaining a connection with the parents, teacher and students, keeping all informed on progress

-Keeping current with best practices in teaching (Professional Development)

-Working with the school team, EAs, teachers, parents and students

Speech and Language
Speech and Language Pathologists provide assessment, consultation, and direct therapy to students who have speech difficulties and to those who have both expressive and receptive language difficulties.

The School-Based Team is a student support structure which provides for dialogue for teachers and other professionals on how to meet the specific needs of students. In regularly scheduled meetings, classroom teachers are assisted with the development and implementation of instructional and/or management strategies for any students who require additional support.

What does the School-Based Team do?
-
Plans and co-ordinates services for students within the school.
- Brings together staff with different roles, perspectives and skills to find solutions to  student needs.
- Monitors student performance and the delivery of services within the school.
- Provides opportunities to share intervention strategies, management techniques and evaluation ideas.
- Provides access to additional district, community and provincial services.
- Creates referrals to District Resources for assessments and other services
