In the town of Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island, Kwalikum Secondary School (KSS) serves the educational needs of approximately 530 students from Grades 8 to 12. Within this population, 70 have a special education designation, 51 are of First Nations ancestry, 45 are attending as international students, and 3 are English language learners. The school serves students from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds and has a principal, a vice-principal, 6 education assistants, thirty two teaching staff and 8 support staff. The majority of students transfer from Qualicum Beach Middle School to join about 25 pupils from Oceanside Middle School to begin Grade 9. Active parent groups support an extensive music program, an Honours Society, a Fine Arts Society, a grad parents committee, a Parent Advisory Council and an athletics program.
"Working together to realize our full potential; by providing programs and activities that are both supportive and challenging, KSS encourages students to realize their creative, intellectual, and physical potential, and develop the personal and social skills necessary for responsible citizenship in a diverse society.This year KSS will work to make our mission statement a continued reality for the students of KSS, working to adapt its approaches to instruction and school organization, use authentic technology rich, project –based learning to engage students and use assessment practices to improve student learning.
