False Bay School
False Bay School is located on Lasqueti Island, off the east side of Vancouver Island in the middle of the Strait of Georgia. The small community school has two classrooms, the primary class is Kindergarten to Grade 4, and the intermediate class is Grade 5-9. The school also supports senior students who choose to learn from a distance.
The island is accessible by passenger-only vessels and is off the provincial power grid. Residents embrace alternative energy options to light their homes and power their appliances. The community is well-known as a leader in fighting climate change by reducing dependence on fossil fuel.
In 2011, the school district committed to working with the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Lasqueti Energy Planning Committee to support a proposal under the federal ecoEnergy Innovation Initiative for a BC Remote Community Integrated Energy Project at the school. In the spring of 2016, School District 69 was pleased to announce that one of the largest solar panel projects in BC was installed at False Bay School!
