Commencement

COMMENCEMENT 2020

Good afternoon KSS Graduates and Families,

We hope you all are well.  Although this year is not ending the way that any of us had hoped for, we have managed to secure approval from the Vancouver Island Health Authority and the School District to hold a modified commencement ceremony for Kwalikum Secondary’s Class of 2020.  The details for this are as follows:

  • Our Commencement Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 between 11am - 3pm.

  • The ceremony will be a “Drive-In” style ceremony, held in our upper parking lot.

  • Graduates will be able to pick up their Caps and Gowns from the main office between June 17th - June 22nd.

  • Commencement fees are $60.00, and these can be paid through our School Accounts On-line.  We would like these fees paid by June 15th.

  • Graduates will sign up for times using an on-line form that will be live by the end of the week next week (June 5).  All students who are on the graduation list, who wish to attend, MUST pre-book.  We hope all will want to participate.

  • There will be 10 Graduates able to book for each window of time (20 minute blocks of time will be set for each group).

  • Graduates will be able to book a slot with other friends - bookings will not be restricted to alphabetical order.

  • Graduates are asked to complete grad scripts which will be read out while they are on stage.  These are due on June 12.   Link: https://forms.gle/AXyxBgivzujSDAuH7

  • Each graduate can be accompanied by family members in ONE vehicle.  These family members MUST be people who regularly live with the student.  Max. ONE vehicle/graduate.

  • As we have to adhere to the strict rules of limiting gatherings to 50 people, we will have limited staff assisting with the ceremony.  We will not be allowing any other public to be on premises to watch.

  • We have arranged for the “stage crossing” to be videotaped, and have hired a company to create a video of our ceremony.  This video will have traditional speeches (which will be pre-recorded), as well as footage of every grad crossing the stage.  This will be made available to students/families approximately one week after the ceremony via a private YouTube link.

  • Graduates will be called to the stage, one at a time.  Family members may, at this time, exit their vehicle and move closer to the stage to watch their graduate cross the stage, take pictures, etc.

  • As graduates cross the stage, their grad scripts will be read out.  Graduates will flip their own tassels on their caps.  When they exit the stage, there will be a series of tables set up - graduates will pick up their diploma folio, scholarship letters (if applicable) and grad momentos.  There will be a spot set up for graduates and families to take a few pictures.

  • Graduates in the group of 10 families may stay to watch other graduates cross the stage.  They must move back to their vehicles and stay physically distanced from each other.  If families wish to leave before this, we ask they leave quietly and respectfully so as to not disrupt the other graduates’ moments crossing the stage.

  • We will ask that all graduates/families in a group leave the parking area fairly quickly after the last graduate in the group has gone through, so that we can prepare for the next group of graduates in a timely manner.

  • We will have a Valedictorian for the Class of 2020.  Information about this process will be sent to grads tomorrow or Monday.  The Valedictorian’s speech will be pre-recorded on June 22nd (time/place TBD) and will be part of the Commencement video.

We hope that all eligible graduates will participate in our Commencement ceremonies so we can celebrate your accomplishments. Thank you and if there are further questions, please email me at lmarshall@sd69.bc.ca.

Sincerely,

Lori Marshall
