June 1st Restart of Schools -- A Message from your Superintendent
This message is being sent to all of our employees, parents and students. First of all, please know how much we appreciate your patience as we find our way through this pandemic. I am sure that you will have either seen or heard about the announcements made today, May 15, by the Premier, the Minister of Education, The Provincial Health Officer and the Minister of State for Child Care. The news release and backgrounders are attached here for you to review.
Parents of children in K-5 are invited to have their children attend school half-time starting June 1, while children in grades 6-12 will be able to return one day per week. The expectation is that children will attend with their teachers during those times, and be supported by EAs and other support staff as possible. Teachers, we will work with you to find balance in what will be a hybrid of in-class and remote support for learning.
We have surveyed elementary parents and will be reaching out to secondary students and parents next week. Please note that children of essential service workers and students needing additional supports will have the option to attend their schools full time.
You will see that physical distancing rules have been amended to say that "younger children should be supported to have minimized physical contact with one another, while older students and adults should seek to maintain safe physical distance whenever possible." Know as well that safe access and cleaning protocols will be in place at all schools and worksites, and we will look to creative scheduling for drop-offs, recess breaks and the like. Bus transportation is expected to be available, but with adjustments for numbers of students who can ride the bus at any one time.
And remember, if anyone, student or staff member, has any degree of sickness, even the sniffles, they are required by the health officers to stay home to stay safe.
We have two full weeks to prepare for June 1, and we will be in touch with all employees and families during that time. Again, thank you for your patience. We are all new to this.
