CORE FRENCH
Offered in Grades 5 to 12, Core French is designed to enable functional understanding and communications in French, as well as to learn about and appreciate francophone cultures. In the Qualicum School District, students pursue this second language learning from Grades 5 to 8. In addition, Core French is offered as an elective choice in Grades 9-12.
FRENCH IMMERSION
The French Immersion program provides the opportunity for non-francophone students to become bilingual in English and French. Students are immersed in French language and culture every day at school, communicating and learning the BC curriculum as they acquire their second language. Students also build knowledge and understanding about language acquisition, enabling them to more easily learn additional languages.
The French Immersion program begins in Kindergarten with 100% instruction in French. In Grade 4, the subject of English Language Arts is introduced, and then the percentage of learning in French gradually decreases as learners progress through their schooling, accomplishing 25% of their coursework in French by Grade 12. Upon graduation from the program, students can participate in French conversations, pursue post-secondary courses in French, and seek bilingual employment opportunities.
Students wishing to register for Kindergarten in the Early French Immersion Program, who have a sibling already in the program, will be given preference for placement. Such preference is conditional upon registering on MyEdBC and completing the application form by 4:00 on February 2, 2024.
*For those who do not have a sibling already in the program, student selection will be held by lottery. Parents will be notified regarding the lottery outcome by March 15, 2024 and all others will be placed on a waitlist. Completion of this form is indication of intent to register a Kindergarten student in the French Immersion Program at École Oceanside Elementary School for the 2024 - 2025 school year.
